World of Athri
The language of the goblinoid races, Krotuk is characterized by its emphasis-based sentence structure: the most important idea starts the sentence, and it proceeds in descending priority. This grammatical structure allows speakers with little time or patience to make themselves more or less understood without committing to lengthy speech. It also augments the language’s ease of interruption, an excellent feature for bellicose goblinoids. Krotuk is written top-to-bottom, left-to-right.
Although it is only one language, Krotuk sees different use among different species. Bugbears are notably terse, generally speaking in sentences of one word in the infrequent occasions that they have something to say. Goblins are more verbose, but their sentences tend to go off track as they lose focus or just want to keep talking. Hobgoblins are the unquestioned masters of the language, as well as the overwhelming majority of writers in it.
The language is notable for its (potentially) elegant, nuanced, and devastating cursing. Hobgoblins pride themselves on baroque and cutting invective, whereas goblins tend to be more straightforward, and bugbears would much rather fight than curse, if given the chance. Krotuk is also notable for its military terminology, which permits commanders to order their troops very efficiently.
